Voluntary Faculty: More than 100 local physicians volunteer their time to teach residents, both in the hospital and in private offices. They play an integral part in the educational process and serve as outstanding mentors for our residents.

 

Hospital-Based Faculty

Mark Bookspan, M.D., is the Director of Internal Medicine Education. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, and Critical Care. Dr. Bookspan is the Director of the Arthritis Clinic at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and has been involved with the teaching program since 1978. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Keck-USC School of Medicine.

Steve Hosea, M.D., is an Associate Director of Internal Medicine Education. He is the Co-Director of the HIV clinic for the County of Santa Barbara and maintains a private practice in Infectious Diseases. Dr. Hosea is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Keck-USC School of Medicine. He has been associated with the teaching program since 1981 and runs morning report almost every day.

Andy Gersoff, M.D., is the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency. In addition, he directly supervises all Internal Medicine residents in their Internal Medicine Continuity Clinic at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and is Co-Director of the County HIV clinic. Dr. Gersoff is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Keck-USC School of Medicine and has been involved with the teaching program since 1980.

Jeff Fried, M.D., is a specialist in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine who became the full-time hospital based ICU Director at Cottage Hospital in August, 2004. Dr Fried graduated from USC School of Medicine in 1982 then remained at LAC-USC Medical Center to complete his residency and fellowship training. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care, and Pulmonary Medicine. Dr Fried has been in practice in Santa Barbara since 1988 and an active and valued member of our faculty for that entire time. Leaving his private practice in 2004, Dr Fried serves on an ongoing basis as the teaching Attending for the Residents' ICU team and patient

Thad Bordofsky , M.D., has been a hospital-based Associate Program Director since February 2006. After completing an Internal Medicine Residency at Alameda County Medical Center in 2003, Dr. Bordofsky joined the full-time teaching faculty at that institution until moving to Santa Barbara. He has a particular interests in Human Rights Medical Training, bedside teaching, and education theory. Raised in Santa Barbara, Dr. Bordofsky returns home to join our program.
